if you want to get a picture of how fast the federal government is growing, i would point out that obama's supposedly cut-down and austere budget clocks in at $3.7 trillion. it has doubled since 2001. keep doubling every decade and this thing will eat the world. this is a pretty good measure of the scope and power of the federal government.
