well now. i'm not the biggest fan of william safire. but he has had his moments.  this  is a pretty good way to say goodbye, and it uses in an op-ed the more delightful voice of his language columns, where self-contradicton is a favorite source of comedy. there oughtta be a bit more meta-commentary, though too much would of course be insufferable.
