the one thing that seems bizarre about the insanely juicy story of the suicide of arthur teele - the powerful miami pol who shot himself in the lobby at the miami herald after accusations of incredible decadence and corruption - is why the herald would fire the columnist who had the last conversation with teele. jim defede taped the conversation, and said he wasn't going to use the tape to write a story. i'd have been awfully tempted to hit the rec switch too. and surely you do an investigation or whatever and *you let defede write his column*: which is part of the news. so i don't think we have a clear idea of what happened, or who had what against defede. you don't fire the guy with the scoop at the moment of the scoop.
