what's really most disturbing about the id decision is the unquestioned assumption on both sides that american education is a totalitarian system. one side wants to forbid the mention of this and that. the other wants to mandate the reading of a certain statement. the idea that the teachers and students in these classrooms are autonomous persons who might want to believe this and that and say they believe it, might want to examine this or that issue in this or that way, is something that never occurs to anyone. we are far far beyond any of these notions. and indeed, in a situation which education consists universally of big morons (from school boards to the dept of ed) manufacturing little morons, notions like autonomy or belief or argument or indeed learning are quaint relics of a backward stage in the wondrous progress of our species.
