ok i've been wondering what to say. israel is reducing a nation to rubble, supposedly because two soldiers are missing. the bush admin must be completely freaking out, because the apocalypse is upon them. they support the end of all things, i guess.

remember robert wexler? the "cocaine is fun" dude? anyway i saw him on the wolf blitzer show saying that any hint that the israelis intentionally targeted un observers (hints made by kofi annan) were totally irresponsible and encouraging to the terrorists. this from the guardian:

Jane Lute, the assistant secretary general for peacekeeping, told the UN security council that the base came under close Israeli fire 21 times - including 12 hits within 100 metres and four direct hits - from 1.20pm until contact was lost with the four peacekeepers inside at 7.17pm.

Ms Lute said the peacekeeping force had protested to the Israeli army after each firing incident. The UN's deputy secretary general, Mark Malloch Brown, and Ms Lute herself also made several calls to Israel's mission to the UN "reiterating these protests and calling for an abatement of the shelling", she said.

this stuff is so great. hand a toddler a tootsie pop. then take it away and shoot a picture. i think the people who object cannot be parents, who of necessity see this kind of thing every few minutes for years. anyway it's very existential: tells you something fundamental about the human condition.

free melanie martinez! i think it's sad what happened to her. cause she's awful cute and i've been watching her introduce dragon tales etc to my daughter in a very comfiorting way for some time. the technicality of her virginity can't really make a difference. you can't really delete the fact that adults are taking care of children.

just wanta say a belated bye bye to charles smith, the guitar player of kool and the gang. i saw the band, let's see, 1983, at the "laurel super music fest" at laurel racetrack, md, with, among others, chaka khan and marvin gaye. i was covering the show for the baltimore city paper. it was afuckinhundreddegrees, and people were literally dropping and getting ambulanced off. but anyway, kool and the gang - at that time riding very high in the jt era ('get down on it' etc) was the straight-up tightest band i ever saw (and i saw everybody). they were fucking amazing, with the full horn section, giving everything on every song, playing with a kind of absolute improvised perfection. it was just one of those things you remember a quarter century later, when you've forgotten everything else.
