watcha listenin to, profcrispy?
been subjecting everyone of late to the mighty yayhoos, possibly the most rocksolid rootsrock barband in the country. it's something of a roots supergroup. it features eric (roscoe) ambel, whom i first saw, let's say, 1981, touring with the amazing joan jett. but you've heard him with steve earle and the del-lords, or if not, start downloading. the bass player, keith christopher, was sort of the occasion for one of my tragic breakups, having shown up in my girlfriend's bed one night (a long story...). this makes me hear songs like "where's your boyfriend now?" a bit differently than i otherwise might. with consummate condescension, i forgive him, and her, and you. he's also an ex-son-in-law of johnny cash (having been hitched to carlene carter) and has played with everyone, and he is as good a rock and country bassist as one could readily imagine. the band's fronted by dan baird, of the georgia satellites. anyway, there is real rock 'n roll out there still. and though i might not be too happy with the values represented ("getting drunk, getting naked, getting laid, getting out" etc), i can sink into the music like coming home. actually i think our boys had better calm down; i don't see how you reach 50 with the lifestyle they're describing; but you gotta admit it's a rock 'n roll thing. i loved their first album, "fear not the obvious," very much, especially the opener "i've got a hankerin" and their "tribute" to hank williams jr: "monkey with a gun." there was also a classic country song: "the bottle or the bible." the brand-new "put the hammer down" is just as strong: unashamedly playing with the cliches of the stones or lynyrd skynyrd. but these are my favorite cliches, actually. the covers ("love train" and "roam (around the world)") are silly, but fun. and they even try a power ballad or 2. the best song might be "would that kill you": a good substitute for couples therapy. "put the hammer down" doesn't seem to be on amazon, yet, but it's on itunes (where i obtained it) or on their site.
