my feeling - derived from years of traumatic experience in "education" - is that for most folks, even or perhaps especially for most folks with good sat scores, literacy in any rich sense is out of reach. they don't want it, actually, and if they had it there's nothing that they could do with it. i suggest teaching people to recognize the shapes 'stop' and 'yield' and leaving it at that. in fact, literacy should be universally prohibited. then the only people who learned to read and write would people who needed to, and who actually had some use for the written word. there's a lot to be said for a scribe system, for example.
