like i say: law is our theology, the elusive spiritual object of our worship and the device or excuse by which people wield power over people, and disavow that they are. to see what i mean, just replace "law" with "god" in the quotation. it's rather odd to think that there's only one law, as laws - international, federal, state, local - swarm the world like mosquitoes. and in fact, there are many laws that apply specifically to poor people, or racial minorities, or women, etc. but you can't be ruled by hundreds of thousands of pages of incoherent text. behind all this must lurk the single being: Law. it's merely a name of god.
