so one thing that dems purport to be offended about is the idea that social programs actually buy votes for their defenders by cutting checks: a kind of built-in dem political advantage. but actually they themselves use this non-stop as a strategy. there's an obama ad up right now that says ' the question is, under whose plan will you be better off?', framing the thing in terms of medicare. all the mediscare-type ads play this card, actually. obviously, not all people who receive benefits vote democratic. but both parties perfectly well understand the direct appeal to your immediate self-interest in government payments or services.
